Divine Mirror, 2023

Divine Mirror

38 x 26 x 26
Materials: Crown Sheath of Bismarck palm branch, stain, sealant, epoxy clay, oil paint

"The creation of this piece paralleled the tragic Maui fires in 2023, a very emotional time of grief and shock throughout our community in Hawai'i. As a creative, especially in times of intensity, I work with my hands as an extension of my heart, as a way to connect with the larger collective. "

This sculpture depicts two hands rising up from the formless, guiding the structure upwards as it splits in two. At the crown sheath (which is where a Bismarck branch anchors to the trunk) are two faces, one feminine and one masculine. One face observes the other, as a witness, and the observed face looks onward.

"The one divides itself into the many to simply experience the joy of becoming one again." - Rachel Orr
